Privacy policy

Mate is a dating and chat app for adults in Thailand, run by Piashare ("we"). We are the data controller for the personal data described here. Questions or requests: privacy@piashare.com.
1. What stays on your phone
Your account is a key made on your phone. Your profile, chats, photos and the people you have met are stored on your phone in an encrypted database. We don't have a copy unless you turn on a backup (section 3).
2. What our server handles
| Data | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Your account ID (a public key) and the time it was first seen | To deliver messages to you and to limit abuse | Until the account is deleted, or 180 days with no phone connecting to it |
| Messages waiting for delivery (encrypted) | To deliver them when your phone comes online | Deleted when delivered, at most 24 hours |
| Photos, videos and voice messages sent while you are apart (encrypted files) | To deliver them | Deleted when downloaded, at most 7 days |
| Push notification token (Firebase Cloud Messaging) | To wake your phone when a message arrives; the push carries no sender or text | Until you delete the account or the token expires |
| Your profile card (name, photo, short bio) and an approximate area of about 1 km, while Discover is on | So people near you can see you in Discover | Only while Discover is on, at most 20 minutes after your phone last updated it; no location history is kept |
| Who you met in person, by day (account IDs only) | To mark profiles as met in person and to stop fake accounts | 60 days |
| Connection records: account ID, a random install ID made by the app (not your phone's hardware ID or model), IP address, country, and when your phone connected and disconnected (no content) | Required of service providers by Thailand's Computer Crime Act | 90 days, longer only if an authority orders it for a specific case |
| Reports: the reason, your note, and the chat messages you chose to attach | To review reports, ban people who break the rules and handle appeals | Until the case closes, plus 90 days; one year if we reported it to the authorities (see the child safety page) |
| Bans and moderation decisions | To keep banned people out and to answer appeals | As long as the ban lasts |
Messages you attach to a report are no longer end-to-end encrypted, because you chose to share them with us. Nothing else you send can be read by us.
3. Backups
If you turn on account backup, your phone uploads your account, profile and contacts encrypted with your recovery code. We can't open it without that code. If you sign in with Google or LINE to protect the code, we store a scrambled ID of that login and a locked copy of the code that also needs your PIN; we never see the PIN. A backup is deleted when you delete it, when you delete your account, or 180 days after its last upload.
4. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and location
Discover uses Bluetooth and nearby Wi-Fi to find Mate phones close to you. These signals go straight between phones. Android may ask for location permission for Bluetooth scanning; Mate uses it only to find people nearby and, while Discover is on, to send the approximate area described above. Mate does not track your location in the background.
5. Who we share data with
- Cloudflare runs our server and stores the data in section 2 for us.
- Google Firebase Cloud Messaging delivers wake-up notifications. It gets your push token, not your messages.
- Google or LINE, only if you choose to sign in with them.
- Authorities, when Thai law requires it, such as a court order. We can only give what we have, which never includes the content of your messages.
- Child protection bodies such as the police and NCMEC, when we find child sexual abuse material (see the child safety page).
We don't sell personal data, show ads, or use advertising trackers. Some providers may process data outside Thailand; we only use providers that protect it to the standard the PDPA requires.
6. Legal basis
We handle your data to provide the service you asked for (contract), to keep Mate safe from abuse (legitimate interest), to meet legal duties such as keeping connection records (legal obligation), and with your consent for location and optional features. You can withdraw consent at any time in the app's settings.
7. Your rights
Under Thailand's Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) you can ask to see, get a copy of, correct, move or delete your data, and object to or limit how we use it. Most of your data is on your phone, where you control it. For data on our server, email privacy@piashare.com with your Mate ID (in the app, on your profile). We answer within 30 days. You can also complain to the Office of the Personal Data Protection Committee (PDPC).
To delete your account, see Delete your account.
8. Age
Mate is for people aged 18 and over. We don't knowingly collect data from anyone younger. If you think a child is using Mate, report them in the app or email safety@piashare.com.
9. Security
Messages and files are encrypted on your phone before they leave it. Our server only stores what is listed above, and access to admin tools is restricted and logged.
10. Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app before the change applies. The date at the top shows the latest version.
